The Connection Between Mouth and Body

Posted .

You’ve probably heard about such things as the mind/body connection, but did you know that the mouth/body connection is also quite prominent? The health of the body and the health of the mouth are very closely connected.

Studies have linked poor mouth health to diseases or conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, pregnancy complications and other health problems. A healthy oral system, however, promotes self-esteem, assists in maintaining proper nutrition, promotes social interaction, and contributes to a general sense of well-being.

Infection and bacteria in the mouth can exacerbate existing conditions, and existing systemic problems can lead to mouth troubles. Your mouth can also warn you of other dangers to the body’s overall health. A few signals it can send that something is wrong are:

-Ulcers
-Lesions
-Bleeding gums
-Swollen gums
-Reduced saliva flow (dry mouth)
-Bone loss
-Halitosis
